I cannot say many nice things about MSNBC, but one compliment I can give them is that they don’t hide who they are. They are decidedly progressive Democrats and proud of it. Other outlets, not so much. They pretend to be neutral and honest arbiters of truth, but what they say hardly differs from MSNBC.
Take NBC’s coverage of the autopen story. To catch you up, the Constitution reserves the pardon power for the president, and it is not delegable to a subordinate. The Biden administration issued thousands of pardons and commutations during the lame-duck term, but the president was unaware of them. In other words, these pardons and commutations are legally void, and people are criminally prosecutable for forgery and fraud.
What is the allegedly non-partisan and neutral NBC’s reaction? Running a story with the headline, “Lead investigator into Biden's use of an autopen signed letters with a digital signature.” Instead of covering the real story, NBC is trying to create a diversion that Republicans are hypocrites because Congressman James Comer used a digital signature.
This is ridiculous. The problem is not that Biden used the autopen. There are too many things to sign with his hand for a president, which is why the autopen was created. The problem is that he was non compos mentis and could not approve of these pardons and commutations. Instead, his chief of staff, Jeff Zients, approved of them. In response to an inquiry about a list of people to be granted clemency, Zients emailed back:
I approve the use of the autopen for the execution of all of the following pardons.
“I approve,” not “The president approves.” Who is Jeff Zients to approve of pardons? Who elected him? How many votes has he ever received outside student body elections?
There are two separate scandals here. One is the continued story of covering up Biden’s mental state. The other one is people who illegally did things in the president’s name and without his knowledge and approval. These people should be locked up.
Congress and the Department of Justice should investigate this. There was a coup in America, where people like Zients governed without legal authority. We typically have a culture in America that lets bygones be bygones and move on once administrations change, but this is different for two reasons.
First, that is for ex-presidents, not those who work for them. Presidents (until Donald Trump) did not stay in politics, so we did not have to worry about the abuse of power again. Subordinates do. White House chiefs of staff—assuming the rot is not deeper—remain active in politics and sometimes even become cabinet secretaries in future administrations.
Second, it was ‘let bygones be bygones’ until the Democrats tried to put Trump in prison. They changed the rules, so let us play on their terms.
An investigation is also necessary because we don’t know how deep the rot is. Who else forged Biden’s orders? What other policies were carried out without the president’s explicit approval? We need to know these answers. On the one hand, people involved should be named, shamed, and never allowed back in the government. On the other hand, most of these things are not history but current news. For instance, there are two wars in Ukraine and Israel right now. To best determine future policy, we need to understand how Biden-era policies were made, and whether the president of the United States approved of those policies.
There are also technical procedures that administrations are bound by that make it difficult to undo executive orders—this is why Trump could not undo DACA in his first term. There are government contracts you cannot simply cancel without a penalty. However, if those orders and contracts were issued unlawfully, the Trump administration will no longer be bound by them.
And then there is the last issue: The people who received the pardons and commutations. Here’s a list of the worst of the worst who received commutations.
There are also many people who were let out of prison. There is also the Pennsylvania judge who sold children to for-profit prisons. No, seriously, he accepted cash and, in turn, gave prison sentences to juveniles. One of those unfairly imprisoned people ended up committing suicide. The judge now walks free thanks to Zients. Or Meera Sachdeva, a disgraced doctor who did not give the full doses of medication to her cancer patients, who at best had their painful cancer treatment prolonged and at worst died as a result, and one of her patients might even have contracted HIV as a result of her treatment. Not to mention all the gang members who were turned in by people around them and are waiting for the opportunity to retaliate against the informants.
By proving that these clemencies were issued unlawfully, we can put these monsters back in prison, where they belong.
A lot of people need to be behind bars because of this, from the already convicted criminals who received clemency to the political hacks who forged Biden’s signature to issue them.
Unless you are NBC and think that the real problem here is that Congressman Comer uses digital signatures—which are legally allowed, unlike forgeries.

I fully agree with all you say. As I wrote on my Substack earlier this week - https://jacksotallaro.substack.com/p/pardon-autopen-style - the people who usurped the power of the presidency for their own purposes need to be found, tried, and punished, and all pardons issued illegally must be revoked.
Is there anything the Democrats won't do to push their agenda? Talk about ethically bereft...
