Donald Trump has made annexing Greenland a key objective of his second term. There are three ways to go about it.
One is taking it by military force, and it’s a terrible idea. Denmark is an ally of the United States and has always been a model NATO member. While many NATO members spend on troop welfare and count it as military spending, Denmark actually buys weapons. We should not get into a war with our own friends.
Another way is buying it from Denmark. We have bought many of our territories, including Alaska, which is our largest state, and most famously the Louisiana Territory. The last purchase was in the southwest, today’s southern Arizona. If Denmark wants to sell, it would be a much better way to spend our money than the trillions of dollars Joe Biden handed out during his term.
And the third one is through two referendums.
First, Greenland’s residents will have to vote for independence, and then second, they will have to vote to join the United States. A poll released today by Patriot Polling shows that 57% of Greenland residents support joining the United States of America; 37% oppose.
From a national security perspective, it would be shortsighted not to annex Greenland, if possible, through one of these methods because of the three key benefits it offers us.
The first is natural resources.
The United States has 1.8 million tons of known rare earth deposits. Greenland has 1.5 million tons that we know of. As new technology is making these elements more important every day—if you are reading this, you’re using a device that has rare earth elements in it—access to these is becoming critical. China has 44 million tons of these elements. If we don’t act, China will be able to control us by withholding its deposits from U.S. companies. We should prepare for that scenario. Annexing Greenland is a huge step to nearly double our reserves. Trump and his national security circle understand this... the MSNBC pundits do not.
Greenland also has large deposits of oil and natural gas. Based on the deposits we know of—80 percent of Greenland is undiscovered because it’s under ice—Greenland would add to our natural gas reserves by a fifth and our oil reserves by a third. It will be a huge boost to our economy, especially because we are much more capable of extracting these than the Danes given our existing petroleum infrastructure.
The second one is strategic.
Greenland is the easternmost point of North America. Imagine if the Chinese navy decides to attack us. We have defense infrastructure in Guam and then in Hawaii to stop them or at least slow them down. But we don’t have something like that in the Atlantic Ocean and against Russia—or against China if they decide to go around Africa and attack the East Coast. And I hate to break it to you Russia boot-lickers, but Putin and Russia are not allies of the United States. They are a threat.
Having our military in Greenland permanently will allow us to intercept an attack sooner than we currently can.
Greenland will also be the northernmost part of the United States—and it is on the east, whereas Alaska is on the west. Why does this matter? Because of Russia’s nuclear missiles.
Russia’s missiles are designed to fly through the North Pole if they decide to attack us. Having interceptors in Greenland will be extremely important in detecting and intercepting missiles. (We currently don’t have interceptors for intercontinental ballistic missiles, but there is a movement to finish what Reagan started and create the Strategic Defense Initiative. Greenland will change the entire game.)
The third reason that we should annex Greenland is for reasons we don’t know yet!
Again, 80 percent of Greenland is unexplored. Now, we are not going to find out everything that is under that ice in our lifetimes. But we will bit by bit, and you bet that we are going to find out that in every bit of it, there’s a gold mine, be it sources of energy or rare earth elements or things we don’t even know about yet. It’s like going to the Moon or Mars. You don’t go there because you know what’s there. You go there to find out. Now, imagine if you bought the Moon and everything that’s in there!
America will benefit from the small portion we unearth, and our children will benefit from the next segment, and their children from the next bit.
Trump is doing something very prudent—he is not only thinking of today but also of future generations. Peace through strength always works. It is good to see people back in the White House who understand that truism.
