Recently, Jeff Bezos, who owns the Washington Post, posted on X that changes would be coming to his newspaper. He said, “We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.”
This is welcome news to all conservatives who have been fighting for these ideals for decades. Of course, you’d think that Never Trumpers would love it the most since they broke with the Republican Party claiming that Trump didn’t stand for these things. You’d be wrong.
Immediately after Bezos’s announcement, The Bulwark’s X account posted:
Hey WaPo subscribers! Make The Bulwark your home for coverage of Trump 2.0. Get 1 month FREE of Bulwark+ now for exclusive content, ad-free commentary and more: https://thebulwark.com/subscribe.
When The Bulwark first launched, its tagline was “Conservatism Conserved.” But somehow, when the Washington Post takes a right turn, instead of celebrating it, it is grifting to make money from its left-wing subscribers.
Bill Kristol, one of the site’s founders and its editor at large, reposted this grift tweet.
Kristol has also been going through some political—how to put it nicely?—evolution! Once upon a time, he opposed libertarians’ defense of homosexuality within the Republican Party. Rather, he wrote that “at the end of the day, if there is going to be a serious conservative political movement in this country, and a serious conservative political party, the ‘upholding-moral-standards’ side must prevail,” by which he meant the anti-gay side.
Kristol doesn’t feel the same anymore, which is fair. Most Americans, including conservatives, have changed their minds about this, and Kristol is one of them. But unlike most Americans, he did not stop there. He is also a fierce defender of transgenderism. Recently, he tweeted:
Stand with trans Americans. You don’t have to understand everything about the transgender experience to know that Trump’s acts of humiliation and dehumanization are unjust and dangerous.
And what is this dehumanization? That biological males should play in men’s sports and that the federal government will only accept biological sex on official forms rather than preferred gender—positions most Americans agree with.
Or take abortion. Kristol, once a member of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List board, now claims that “pro-lifers just want to control women’s bodies.”
The Bulwark promised to be the defender of conservatism, but it is now the capital of #Resistance. Whereas it started as a website for anti-Trump Republicans, now you can barely find any conservatism in its pages—or the staff, who are now recruited from the Huffington Post and auditioning for MSNBC.
There is a simple explanation: That’s where the money is. The Bulwark started as a nonprofit funded by left-wing donors. As time passed, subscribers began paying for its content, but the clicks lay with the anti-GOP rage, not conservative policy critique. And they followed the money. Besides, criticizing Trump on deficit spending will not get you an MSNBC slot.
This is even funnier as some Democrats are moderating their rhetoric on some of their extreme positions. (Don’t be fooled, though—when push comes to shove, they still vote for the far-left agenda.) This might be a good election-time tactic for the Democrats, but #Resistance is where the paid subscribers are.
It should not surprise anyone then that these alleged conservatives now oppose free market and individual liberty and favor left-wing resistance. I can only imagine how much money they’d make overnight if everyone who canceled their Washington Post subscriptions gave the money to The Bulwark.
But this makes one wonder: These people were once upon a time conservative Republicans. Did they ever believe any of that, or was it just where the money was back then?
Note: the opinions expressed herein are those of Chuck Warren only and not his co-host Sam Stone or Breaking Battlegrounds’ staff.
Unfortunately, it so often comes down to money. Who’s getting paid to write garbage pretending it’s news. It’s bias and fake reporting.
Everyone has the right to update their beliefs, in fact it's probably necessary for your beliefs to address the current situation. I don't think Bill Kristol fits into this category, but he seems very comfortable in chasing greenbacks. Was probably a grifter all along. Really wasn't a very conservative Conservative when he played that role anyway.
