Blowhard Pete Buttigieg posted on X the following:
"If you're a billionaire, $10 eggs might be just a little disturbance. For most Americans it's a real issue."
Thank you for the breaking news, Mayor Pete. High grocery prices are one of the reasons Americans elected Donald Trump.
That said, let's start with two facts:
Pete Buttigieg is just a jackass. He is a perfidious blow hard who did a subpar job at the Department of Transportation.
Egg prices are too high for working-class Americans.
That being said, why are egg prices so high in President Trump's seventh (7th) week in office? Here are some facts:
First, in 2023, Americans consumed an estimated 281.3 eggs per person annually. So yes, egg consumption is a big part of an American's annual diet. Hence they notice it at the grocery store.
Second, in 2019, the average price of eggs, grade A, large, per dozen was $1.90. Remember who was president in 2019?
Third, in January 2025, the "average price for a dozen large, grade-A eggs in the U.S. hit a record high of $4.95, a significant increase from previous years and a surge from the $2.52 per dozen." NewsNation reported this week that a dozen eggs are around $8 per dozen.
What’s worse, "the price of eggs is expected to skyrocket by more than 40% this year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)."
So, why are egg prices high right now?
"The shell-shocking price increase of eggs is due to the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, outbreak. According to USDA, outbreaks of bird flu "resulted in the depopulation of 13.2 million birds in December 2024,” contributing to the national egg shortage."
President Trump's press secretary "Karoline Leavitt attributed soaring egg prices to the Biden administration’s and USDA’s response to avian flu. She claimed that directives to cull over 100 million chickens led to supply shortages and a 65% price increase in 2024."
And ABC News (no friend of Donald Trump) reported, "The exorbitant costs are a result of a nationwide shock to supply, brought about by a ravaging outbreak of the avian flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over 166 million commercial poultry birds have been affected since 2022, when the outbreak began. But the last few months have been especially devastating.
"In just four months, we've lost 52 million layers and pullets within our nation's egg supply, which is vastly different than any other outbreak that we've seen in the past." Karyn Rispoli, managing editor of Expana, a firm that surveys and tracks the price of eggs, told ABC News. "The biggest difference of late is just that it has been more lethal and really devastated our nation's egg supply."
The avian flu has wreaked havoc on poultry flocks across the country. As a result, Rispoli says that the nation's supply of egg-laying hens is at nearly a ten-year low. Once one chicken is infected, farmers are forced to cull the remainder, after which comes the challenge of repopulating their flocks."
Beyond this force majeure crisis, I am also not accounting for how inflation on other goods increases the cost of raising chickens.
This is not an opinion piece on public health pros and cons of terminating 100 plus million chickens under the Biden/Harris Administration. (Question: Do you think Joe Biden knows his administration killed 100 million chickens?) Rather, this is about why egg prices are high.
They are high because the government probably necessarily reduced production. Demand did not lessen, but availability did. Basic economics.
To replace the missed production, you need new hens. For those at Columbia University, a female chicken is called a "hen." Hence, "most hens typically start laying eggs around 18 weeks of age (4-6 months), but this can vary depending on the breed and individual bird."
So this is going to take most of 2025 to turn around egg production. This 2025 prediction is not taking into account the possibility that the Bird Flu will not be under control. Public health matters.
So, what makes Mayor Pete such a despicable, rotten, dishonest and perfidious public figure is that he knows why the egg prices are high. Instead of being honest and explaining why they are high and why the Biden/Harris Department of Agriculture made these decisions, he is playing politics and propaganda.
Sometimes hard decisions need to be made to protect the public and republic - think budget cuts to get the budget deficit under control. A true leader explains why decisions are made.
Note: the opinions expressed herein are those of Chuck Warren only and not his co-host Sam Stone or Breaking Battlegrounds’ staff.
And while a true leader is telling the facts, Pete Butt-gig continues to make a fool of himself.
