NYT: Sudan erupts in chaos, who is battling for control and why does it matter
Mainstream media continues to provide Americans less and less information about the broader world we live in, many people aren’t even aware Sudan is in crisis. NYT has a good primer on the explosion of violence, really a civil war between leaders, that has erupted. The conflict is escalating…
“After Mr. al-Bashir’s rule ended, the military signed a power-sharing agreement, but then took over with a coup in 2021. One of Africa’s largest countries, where the United States and its allies have tried to aid a transition to civilian control, is now reeling from a new crisis that many fear could become full-blown civil war.”
GREG PRICE VIA SUBSTACK: APUSH Textbooks Are Covering The Trump Presidency; The Bias Is Worse Than You Think
Universities, and particularly colleges of education, have completely jumped the shark. A huge portion of what Greg Price discovers in the 5 most popular AP U.S. History textbooks is little more than leftist agitprop – deliberate misinformation designed to impart politically convenient lies for the benefit of the ruling class.
“Many of the books also cover in depth the unproven sexual misconduct allegations against President Trump and Justice Clarence Thomas while altogether leaving out any mentions of the many similar allegations against President Bill Clinton.
In addition, they all repeat debunked narratives about the Trayvon Martin shooting, and cover the Michael Brown shooting without acknowledging that the Obama Justice Department found the “hands up don’t shoot” narrative was a complete fabrication.”
MIAMI HERALD: Haitian women’s national team aims to “keep shocking the world” at first World Cup
Miami Herald has a great, uplifting story about the Haitian women who have overcome innumerable obstacles to represent their country on the international stage…
“Every time we step on the field, it’s not just about us, it’s about representing all the people struggling in Haiti,” she said. “We don’t take that responsibility lightly. Every time we go in for a tackle, or pass or shoot, we give it our all because being able to make our country smile is all we want. I also want to continue what my Dad did also show that same love my grandfather had for Haiti.”
WASHINGTON TIMES: 44% say America would be ‘worse off’ without the Bible, but usage has fallen: Survey
Religious affiliation is waning, and usage of the bible is declining, but a slim plurality of Americans still say our country would be worse off without the bible. For those who disagree, the lapsed Jew writing these roundups would like to point out that societies filled with the plural marriages common prior to Christianity left huge numbers of young men adrift without women – which is, to this day one, of the single most reliable indicators of future mass violence. Christianity also codified a societal obligation to care for elderly and sick people. Formed a community that extended beyond nuclear families, resulting in far greater personal security for members. Created a moral framework for a predictable legal system. And emphasized good works as being equal in value to great wealth. Much more. The benefits of Christian religious doctrine, in any honest accounting, massively outweigh the harms people who dislike religion point to.
“It shows women, at 41%, are more likely to be Bible readers than men (36%) and that Black Americans (57%) and older citizens (48%) are most likely to read and engage with the Bible. Asian Americans (27%), White Americans (35%) and members of Generation Z (35%) are least likely to be Bible readers.
Members of evangelical (70%) and historically Black (68%) congregations top the list of the Bible-engaged, while Catholics clock in at 37%, the lowest figure according to the survey.
About 10 million Americans said they were “friendly” toward the message of the Bible even if they’re not active readers of the Scriptures. That group moved into what the society called the “Movable Middle” of Americans who are exploring the Bible’s message, a cohort estimated at 76 million people.”
POST MILLENIAL: REI closing Portland store amid rampant theft
No matter how woke you are, and REI is all-in woke, the reality of leftist municipal policy is a nightmare for society, and a suicide-pill for retailers. How long before the Amazon warehouse is the only retailer left in Portland?
“This closure comes as other large retailers try to address the rampant theft happening in the Oregon city. Last month, Walmart made the move to close all of its stores in Portland on March 24th. All 379 employees are to be terminated by June 2nd.
In February, a Nike store sent a letter to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler in an attempt to get protection for their MLK Community Store. Nike chief security officer Joe Marsico said at the time the store was closed “in response to deteriorating public safety conditions and rapid escalation in retail theft.”
REUTERS: Archaeologists unearth 500-year-old Incan ceremonial bath
At Battlegrounds, we admit to still being fascinated with our world, history, and the incredible scientific discoveries that happen every day. Here’s a great piece from Reuters on an amazing S. American find…
“Archaeologists in the Peruvian Andes have discovered an Inca bathing complex built half a millennia ago, which they believe may have served the elite of the sprawling empire than once dominated large swathes of South America.”
BLOOMBERG via THE COLUMBIAN: Taiwan buys 400 anti-ship missiles from U.S.
Fears of Chinese territorial aggression against Taiwan continue to escalate as Taiwanese government completes the purchase of anti-ship missiles the U.S. congress approved for sale in 2020. Recent war games have highlighted serious deficiencies in the ability of Taiwan and the U.S. to counter a potential Chinese assault on Taiwan, and our other allies in the region are being aggressively courted by Beijing to stay out of any future conflict, which would seriously hamper U.S. response capabilities, hence Taiwan’s current military buildup.
“Taiwan has previously purchased ship-launched versions of the Harpoon, which is made by Boeing Co. Now, a contract with Boeing issued on Taiwan’s behalf by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command marks a first for the mobile, land-launched version, according to Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council.”
NY POST: Two teens shot as rowdy mob clashes with Chicago cops for second night
Rampant, organized mobs stormed parts of Chicago this weekend, looting, attacking bystanders, fighting with each other, and causing chaos. The response of both outgoing far-left Mayor Lori Lightfoot and incoming far-left Mayor Brandon Johnson were equally blasé. Here’s an idea: Chicago cops need to flood the poor, crime-ridden areas spawning this chaos, and abandon the tony neighborhoods where the pols excusing it live. Let’s see how the Dem pols who refuse to properly support law and order enjoy living with the fruits of their labor.
NBC NEWS: Republicans reject Feinstein committee swap, putting Democrats in a bind
Say what you want about the GOP in DC, they have held and continue to hold the line on judges. Considering Democrats use of lawfare to achieve political victories the electorate isn’t willing to give them, holding the line on Biden’s most radical judicial nominees is the single most effective thing DC Republicans can do right now.
“These are, by definition, the most controversial nominees," Cornyn told NBC News. "And if Democrats are depending strictly on their own party-line vote to get them out of committee— I don’t think there’s any appetite on our side to help what we consider to be controversial or unqualified nominees to get confirmed."
Asked whether there's a path to winning the 10 Senate Republicans needed to break a filibuster and execute the swap, he said: "I don't think so."
Feinstein, 89, has been absent from the Senate for weeks after she revealed she had been hospitalized with shingles. Amid calls to resign her seat, Feinstein issued a statement asking that she be swapped out with another Democrat so the panel can advance judges until she is able to return.”
The American Prospect: Big Tech lobbyists explain how they took over Washington
In just a few short years, Big Tech has transformed from a collection of radical outsiders suspicious of government and resistant to regulation to the ultimate, embedded swamp creatures, deeply tied to the halls of power. How and why did it happen?
“Lobbyists for the major tech industries set out to reverse how trade negotiators think about tech platforms, and what policies they should pursue in trade agreements. Through developing social ties and personal networks, they got their position adopted as official policy, and have kept it there by cultivating career staff rather than the ever-changing cast of political appointees.”
